Musical 2017

"Practically perfect in every way…" is a precisely accurate five-word review of The Australian School of the Arts' production of Mary Poppins, The Broadway Musical.   Weekend Notes On-line Review

The Australian School of the Arts celebrated 20 years of Musical Theatre this year, with our production of the Broadway Musical ‘Mary Poppins’. The two-week season at Redlands Performing Arts Centre sold out in just days, leaving us with no choice but to add an additional performance to meet demand.

The show involved so many firsts for The Australian School of the Arts - our longest season, biggest audience, first time with a digitally projected set, first time using a theatrical flying rig, and also our largest cast requiring over 300 costumes.

The show received excellent local and national reviews including the prestigious theatre publication Stage Whispers. Audiences were amazed at the professional standard of our young performers, with many ranking it on a par with high budget professional touring shows.

ASTA Drama Academy Showcase 2016

We are pleased to announce that the ASTA Drama Academy will be hosting their annual Showcase on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 November. 2016 has been an exciting year for the Academy with the addition of two extra ‘production groups’ to the Program as well as the regular classes. We are excited to not only be performing “Shrek Jr” as our Year 7 & 8 Musical for this year, but also “James and the Giant Peach” and “Circus Olympus”.

Performance Details & Show Times

‘James and the Giant Peach’ has been a wonderful opportunity for selected students from Prep to Year 6 to work collaboratively to produce this wonderful children’s classic story. Our Year 5 & 6 students have taken on a leadership role throughout the process which has been a wonderful challenge for all students involved.

‘Circus Olympus’ has been an opportunity for students in Year 7 & 8 who have a keen interest in Acting to explore and push their skills in a very focused environment. The students have experimented with their physicality and have been pushed to learn lines and create strong characters in this quirky, Greek inspired tale.

‘Shrek the Musical’ has seen a large group of Year 7 & 8 students push themselves into new avenues this year once again. They have worked on performance skills across voice, acting and dance and are looking forward to bringing you the high energy production of Shrek. This loveable movie series has been transformed into an entertaining Musical including all the characters we know and love and the students have worked incredibly hard this year combining all three areas of singing, acting and dancing to bring you a fantastic junior interpretation of this piece.

The Addams Family - Sell Out Success!

Sheldon College and the Australian School of the Arts (ASTA) set another benchmark of Arts excellence with their recent production of the "The Addams Family" at the Redland Performing Arts Centre in Cleveland. The five performance dates sold out in record time and the packed houses erupted in standing ovations for the superb student performances. The cast of over 70 actors, singers and dancers were ably supported by a 19 piece band over and 40 strong media and backstage crew. Many tickets were sold to members of the Redlands community who have come to realise the high standard of productions staged by Sheldon College.

ASTA Director, Mr Darren Harvey, said: "The amazing results of this year's Musical is clear evidence of the quality of teaching in our ASTA program, and shows how student skill sets can be extended to a professional standard".

Vocal Director, Mr Adam Lopez, stated “This Musical has really raised the bar in so many respects. I am amazed how students have been able to understand the complex nuances of subtext, narrative, comic timing and combining all of these elements along with choreography and singing, a skill beyond their years. The cast has been one of the most delightful that I have ever worked with. All students were eager to learn and explore areas beyond their comfort zone; all traits of true professionals in the making. I am going to miss seeing the quirky characters on stage but am confident the students who played them will remember them for the rest of their lives. An absolute pleasure working with such talent”

The production was ably supported by many parents and staff who assisted backstage with makeup, costuming and set building. Congratulations to all involved in this stellar production.

Musical 2016

We are pleased to announce that our 2016 Senior College Musical is ‘The Addams Family’.  All performances will be presented at the Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) in Cleveland and tickets will go on general sale from Wednesday 23 March 2016.

It’s a dismal day at the Addams family’s mansion, with the ever-approaching storm clouds reflecting the gloomy atmosphere that has beset the household. Daughter Wednesday, now eighteen years old, has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family: she has fallen in love. Lucas Beineke, the object of her affections, comes from a seemingly normal family, and he and his parents Mal and Alice are on their way to the Addams’ estate to become better acquainted with the family over dinner. Brother Pugsley, who has been largely ignored since Wednesday’s involvement with Lucas, begins to miss the attention his sister previously paid to him and pleads with her to torture him once more. Meanwhile, mother Morticia finds herself conflicted over her ever-maturing daughter’s newfound feelings, while oblivious father Gomez simply wishes things would remain the way they were. As they learn to relate to the Beinekes and cope with Wednesday’s romance, one thing is certain: the Addams family will never be the same.
