Legally Blonde, the Musical

Legally Blonde, the Musical: A Seriously, Sensational Spectacle

The Australian School of the Arts has once again done Sheldon College proud, with a stunning production of the Broadway Musical “Legally Blonde, the Musical”.  The two week season was a sell-out success, with over 3 000 Redlands residents enjoying this high-energy, fun-filled, effervescent show.

Legally Blonde is The Australian School of the Arts’ 19th annual Senior College Musical and involved 124 students across the Cast, Band, Backstage Crew and Technical Crew, all contributing in their own area of expertise to help make this show an outstanding success.

The show has received some wonderful feedback from Redlands residents, praising the professionalism of the production and remarking on the maturity of the Cast and the seamless integration of the live Band.

These comments are remarkable when one bears in mind that our instrumental students were performing the full Broadway musical score, which would challenge even seasoned professionals. Most schools taking on this musical would have performed the “junior” version of this score, or had bands made up predominantly of staff members.

In addition, this year’s Cast was comprised of all but three performers who made their debut in a Lead role.  According to Executive Producer/Director, Mr Darren Harvey, "The greatest thing about this year’s Musical has been watching those students who have, over the years, been patiently waiting in the wings, finally get their chance to step into the spotlight and blow the audience away.  It never ceases to amaze me what outstanding talent and potential we have on that stage."

Musical 2018

The 2018 Senior College Musical is “Legally Blonde, The Musical”.

You’ve seen the movie, now see the smash-hit live on stage!

Based on the novel by Heather Hach and the hit movie of the same name, Legally Blonde: The Musical chronicles the journey of the famously perky Elle Woods, a fashion savvy UCLA sorority girl, who finds her life turned upside down when she is dumped by her boyfriend Warner. In an effort to prove to Warner that she is more than just some blonde sorority girl, she follows him to Harvard Law School, where she struggles to fit in and do well. Ultimately she defies expectations, using her knowledge of the law to successfully defend exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial, and manages to stay true to her delightfully pink personality.

From the Redlands-based team that brought you Hairspray, Dreamgirls, The Addams Family and Mary Poppins comes another spectacular production not to be missed. With iconic songs like What You Want, Ireland and Whipped into Shape, by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, Legally Blonde is guaranteed to be a funny, effervescent, crowd-pleaser.

Musical 2017

"Practically perfect in every way…" is a precisely accurate five-word review of The Australian School of the Arts' production of Mary Poppins, The Broadway Musical.   Weekend Notes On-line Review

The Australian School of the Arts celebrated 20 years of Musical Theatre this year, with our production of the Broadway Musical ‘Mary Poppins’. The two-week season at Redlands Performing Arts Centre sold out in just days, leaving us with no choice but to add an additional performance to meet demand.

The show involved so many firsts for The Australian School of the Arts - our longest season, biggest audience, first time with a digitally projected set, first time using a theatrical flying rig, and also our largest cast requiring over 300 costumes.

The show received excellent local and national reviews including the prestigious theatre publication Stage Whispers. Audiences were amazed at the professional standard of our young performers, with many ranking it on a par with high budget professional touring shows.

ASTA Drama Academy Showcase 2016

We are pleased to announce that the ASTA Drama Academy will be hosting their annual Showcase on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 November. 2016 has been an exciting year for the Academy with the addition of two extra ‘production groups’ to the Program as well as the regular classes. We are excited to not only be performing “Shrek Jr” as our Year 7 & 8 Musical for this year, but also “James and the Giant Peach” and “Circus Olympus”.

Performance Details & Show Times

‘James and the Giant Peach’ has been a wonderful opportunity for selected students from Prep to Year 6 to work collaboratively to produce this wonderful children’s classic story. Our Year 5 & 6 students have taken on a leadership role throughout the process which has been a wonderful challenge for all students involved.

‘Circus Olympus’ has been an opportunity for students in Year 7 & 8 who have a keen interest in Acting to explore and push their skills in a very focused environment. The students have experimented with their physicality and have been pushed to learn lines and create strong characters in this quirky, Greek inspired tale.

‘Shrek the Musical’ has seen a large group of Year 7 & 8 students push themselves into new avenues this year once again. They have worked on performance skills across voice, acting and dance and are looking forward to bringing you the high energy production of Shrek. This loveable movie series has been transformed into an entertaining Musical including all the characters we know and love and the students have worked incredibly hard this year combining all three areas of singing, acting and dancing to bring you a fantastic junior interpretation of this piece.
