Sheldon College’s 2013 production of “Hairspray the Musical” opened on Wednesday 1 May 2013 to a sold out audience and finished with a spontaneous standing ovation after every show at the Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC).
The cast of 75 students delivered on every level with a simply brilliant performance, ably backed up by a hardworking media team, backstage crew and pit band. Over 130 students from Sheldon College were involved in the production, with the majority of key roles being played by students from The Australian School of the Arts program. The industry level Arts training available to students at the College was certainly evidenced by all in attendance on opening night, with many guests commenting on the consummate professionalism of the actors, musicians and dancers on stage.
The entire season of performances was sold out and there was also a free ticket community engagement matinee performance on Friday 3 May attended by school groups from across the Redlands and Moreton Bay islands, as well as special interest community groups. For many of these attendees, it was their first visit to RPAC and for some it was their first musical theatre performance. Some of the school groups used the performance as stimulus material for classroom discussion and responding.
The students at Sheldon College and the Australian School of the Arts are now back to their usual scholastic routine, but will carry the memories of an amazing week of Arts performance for many years to come.
