Success in National Dance Championship

DanceLife Unite Nationals 2017 is Australia’s Elite National dance championship.  It is a dance competition with a difference – not only providing excellent performance opportunities, but it also delivers the distinct advantage of having both Australian and International professional judges encouraging and mentoring students.  Dancers from all across Australia travelled to Sydney to compete in the National titles.  The competition started on Tuesday 19 September and finished on Sunday 24 September with the Grand Final.

Regional heats took place in Brisbane in July with all Sheldon College Dance Troupes qualifying for Nationals.  This is the first year Sheldon College has travelled to Sydney to compete at Nationals.  31 dancers represented the College at Nationals and performed four items in the competition which was held at Olympic Park. Places taken by the College were ‘Castle on the Hill' which received 4th Place in the High School Dance Group – Jazz or Hip Hop section, 'Step in Time' took out first place in the Entertainment section with a high score of 97 out of 100.  Sheldon College received National Champion Runners Up across all High School sections.  The College was asked to also perform as special guests at the Grand Finals on Sunday 24 September.  Sheldon College was the only school group to perform at this prestigious event.

Sheldon College students participated in workshops conducted by leading dance professionals including Adam Parson, Alysha Percy, Stephen Tannos and Brandon Atoui.  Miss Jessica Hughes - Head of Dance, Mr Rick Samuels and Mrs Colleen Palmer attended with the students and they enjoyed seeing the way students learned and developed their skills as dancers under the guidance of guest artists.  Students also spent some time sightseeing in Sydney and building team morale.

The value of this experience was immense and all students left feeling inspired, motivated and encouraged to continue pursuing their interest in dance.  They were encouraged to build confidence, to create their voice and develop as artists, and to be the best versions of themselves.

Arts Academy Awards 2017

The 2017 Arts Academy Awards was held on Saturday 16 September, in the Sheldon Event Centre, in-front of an audience of over 800 people. This annual event recognises the best of Sheldon College student works across all Senior College art forms and incorporates the award ceremony for the student nominees from Visual Art, Music, Vocal Studies, Acting, Dance and Film, Television and New Media.

This year, over 300 singers, dancers and musicians took to the stage in performances which were nothing short of spectacular; while the stunning lighting and audio visual production was provided by students from the Australian School of the Arts' Film, Television and New Media Program.

Notable performances included ‘I Will Always Love You’, ‘Africa’, ‘Incomplete’ and a wonderful ‘Mary Poppins’ medley – a nod to Sheldon College’s highly successful 2017 musical. A definite highlight of the evening was ‘When We Were Young’, an Adele song, performed by teacher Miss Rachel Head, Year 12 Female Vocalists (Eve), the Arts Academy Show Choir and the Arts Academy Band. Another highly popular item was "Somebody to Love", performed by our incredibly talented and much loved Arts Staff.

Mr Darren Harvey, Sheldon College Director of the Australian School of the Arts said “Tonight is a great example of what is possible when students believe in something and work hard towards achieving that goal. With the right guidance these students are capable of artistic feats that even they did not know was possible. Tonight was a true example of hybrid arts in action.”

Just Dance 2017

Just Dance 2017

On Saturday 17 June, Sheldon College presented their annual dance extravaganza, Just Dance. Performances featured students from the ASTA Dance Academy, ASTA Professionals Program, Classroom Dance, the Senior College Choreography Competition and the Senior College Musical, Mary Poppins. The 2017 Prefects and selected Staff also joined in to compete in a dance-off. A range of dance genres and styles were displayed including jazz, ballet, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop.

The event was proudly brought home to the Sheldon Event Centre for the first time this year, as part of the College’s 20 Year Celebrations. Previous Dance Captains, who have been responsible for shaping and leading the dance program at Sheldon College, were invited back to enjoy the show and 2015 Alumnus, Travis Johnson, spoke on their behalf about the way in which dance, and teaching dance, has impacted his life beyond school.

The annual 'Get Dancing' Award, in memory of Chloe Saunders, was presented to Year 6 student Elise McKillop during the Evening Show. This award is presented to a Sheldon College student who demonstrates, beyond everything else, a passion for dance.
